Library and Information Science

Shiyali Ramamrita Ranganathan, popularly known as S.R. Ranganathan

His development of the Five Laws of Library Science, the Colon Classification system, and numerous theoretical advancements transformed librarianship into a rigorous, user-centered discipline. Ranganathan’s work not only reshaped library practices in India but also left an indelible mark on global information science, influencing classification systems, library education, and access to knowledge.

CSICC LIBRARY:

The College Library was established in 1973, the same year as the inception of the college. From a modest beginning with a small collection of books, it has grown into a well-equipped learning resource centre supporting the academic and research needs of students and faculty.

The library is located on the second floor of the college building and provides seating for 100 users. It houses a rich collection of books, reference materials, journals, magazines, newspapers, CDs, e-books, and e-journals. Since 2015, the library has been a member of the N-LIST programme of the INFLIBNET Centre, providing access to a wide range of digital resources.

The library is fully automated with E-lib Management Software (Version 25.3), a multi-user Integrated Library Management System (ILMS). Barcode technology has been implemented for efficient circulation and inventory management, with every library book assigned a unique barcode based on the Dewey Decimal Classification (DDC) system. A digital movement register integrated with an Orbit Scanner records the entry and exit of students and faculty through identity card scanning.

To promote reading habits and effective use of library resources, the library regularly organizes Book Talks, Book Exhibitions, Orientation Programmes, N-LIST Awareness Programmes, and the Best Library User Award. With its modern facilities, quality resources, and user-oriented services, the library continues to support teaching, learning, and research in the institution.
